Why & How
WHY

The World Anthem Project started out as a curious music endeavor to hear what the composition would sound like that was completely generated from the common notes and what Musicologist call tendencies of all the world’s national anthems.  No one person or nation created it, it is

completely written from these observations. In essence, it wrote itself.

The World Anthem Project has no political, economic, religious or cultural agenda. It does not advocate a one-world government. The World Anthem is simply a music project.

The World Anthem however does honor the heritage and national pride of all nations and yet equally celebrates the people of these nations together in one song.  If there is one hope from this project, it is that it summons the spirit of the human connection and the goal towards peace in the world.

HOW

The World Anthem composition and lyrics were composed using ExperimentsIn Musical Intelligence – a computer system that scientifically analyzes the common notes, tendencies and lyrics of musical work.  The brainchild of Music Professor David Cope, Experiments In Musical Intelligence links together notes, harmonies, rhythms, words and sets of instruments conforming to what makes musical sense.  Eventually, a pattern emerges that captures the most important part of the human composer’s musical style. Experiments in Musical Intelligence supports the creation of new music that simulates the style of music by diverse composers and from diverse cultures.

This same process could have been done by hand using musicologist formulas; we chose to use Experiments In Musical Intelligence in order to keep the project unbiased, eliminate human error and because of the shear volume of the project.  Although a computer was used to create the World Anthem, a computer did not write the World Anthem – it wrote itself.  No one person or nation created it.  Each nation is equally represented.
